Michelob ULTRA Ad Features Country Johnny Mathis Tune

Michelob ULTRA has licensed a Country Johnny Mathis song from the Avid Group Publishing/BMI catalog for its new ad, ’19th HOLE’. The ad features the Country Johnny Mathis recording, “Just Do The Best You Can” and was released in May 2022.

“Just Do The Best You Can” was recorded by Johnny in the 60’s, possibly 1967 or 1968, at RCA studios in Nashville, TN with musicians like Lloyd Green on steel guitar. However, it was never released. It was stored away on a reel-to-reel master tape and put on the shelf. Perhaps that was due to the fact that Bobby Helms, of “Jingle Bell Rock” fame, had recorded a version of the song around the same time. The true reason for shelving the recording is unknown.

It wasn’t until the early 2020’s that 3 versions of the song were discovered on a reel-to-reel master. The tape contained slow-tempo, mid-tempo and up-tempo versions of the song. The up-tempo version had that 60’s vintage vibe and it released and made available on streaming platforms via the Avid label , distributed by Syntax Creative, almost 50 years after being recorded.

Now, more than 60 years after being recorded , most of that time tucked away and forgotten on a reel-to-reel tape, the song is being heard on national television in the U.S. and Canada via the Michelob ULTRA campaign.
